Introduction
When Harper Lee released “To Kill a Mockingbird” in 1960, the American Civil Rights movement was well underway. Even though the story takes place in the 1930s, Atticus Finch alludes to the movement when he discusses the racial injustice of the south when he says, “Don’t fool yourselves – it’s all adding up and one of these days we’re going to pay the bill for it. I hope it’s not in your children’s time.”
The purpose of this webquest is to have you learn about the events that fueled the Civil Rights Movement beginning with the Supreme Court Decision of Brown vs. Board of Education and all the way through the March on Washington.
